The Nexium maker has been selling its drug, which is a generic version of the popular heartburn medicine esomeprazole, for as low as $1.16 a pop.
Nexium, which is expected to be available in the United States on October 27, is being sold by a company called Mylan Inc.
The company's patent for Nexium (also known as Nexium, or acid reflux disease) expired in 2014, but is now facing a generic version of the drug from AstraZeneca.
"I've been getting a lot of attention from people on here that want to use this to make a name for their health," says Michael Segal, the company's president of research.
Segal said Mylan will be selling the generic version for a fraction of the price of its branded version, which was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in 2001.

Dr. John G. Guggenbiel, an expert in gastrointestinal diseases at the Mayo Clinic, said that in most cases patients taking Nexium do not have the stomach problems that patients who took Prilosec had.
He said patients who take Nexium have symptoms of acid reflux disease and, as a result, are in a "dangerous" state of acid reflux. They can become "over-sensitive" and have a "crowded" stomach.
He added that patients on Nexium are more likely to have "acid reflux" than their counterparts on Prilosec. Patients who take Nexium often also have heartburn and acid reflux.
Patients who take Nexium are less likely to be diagnosed with GERD.
"They want to be able to go out and see a doctor and have the right diagnosis and treatment plan, and that is very important," Guggenbiel said.
